Wipe-Kit Distribution Program
Wipe-kit Instructions
The RSO must perform surveys at regular intervals to ensure that no Radioactivity has leaked out of the device and contaminated its exterior surface. For most ECDs this test must be performed every six months. Only for Varian ECDs an extension to 36 months has been granted in California. Check with your Local Authority to find out if this extension applies in your area. The kit consists of 2 swabs and a Leak-test Record Sheet. See the Leak-test Record sheet for instructions on how to perform the wipe. Return the swabs in the envelope provided with the record sheet. This document will be returned with the removable activity amount recorded.

CJ Bruyn & Co. offers a reminder service, the Wipe-kit Distribution Program.

There is no charge to enroll. Kits are sent out every six months, being received 5 - 7 days prior to the 1st of the required month.

When a reading indicating that the removable amount of Radioactivity is above .500 Micro Curie X 10E-3 CJ Bruyn & Co. has determined it prudent to recommend that the detector undergo cleaning at the first convenient moment.

When the removable activity reaches 5.00 Micro Curie X 10E-3 the Radiation Authorities require that you generate a Contamination Report. This report must be accompanied by a complete history with all prior survey records and include the planned course of action on Company Letter-head, signed by the Radiation Safety Officer.

The following items should be included in the CONTAMINATION REPORT:

1) We have taken the ECD S/N:______ out of operation on ___/___/___ (date) due to it having reached a contamination level of _______. (this information can be found on your Leak-test Record Sheet)

2a) We have sent the detector to CJ Bruyn & Co. for Cleaning.
2b) We have Relinquished Ownership of this detector to CJ Bruyn & Co.
2c) We have instructed CJ Bruyn & Co. to perform a cleaning and to install a new source in the detector.

3) We have made an attempt to find out what might have caused the containment failure and have come to the following conclusion ________________ (or lack there of).

4) We plan to continue use of this detector. After cleaning we plan to initially survey the detector more frequently. (Indicate a survey schedule).

5) In an attempt to avoid future problems, we will:
A) Closely monitor our working procedures to ensure them to be in accordance with the Manufacturer's operating instructions.
B) Contact CJ Bruyn & Co. and discuss potential causes of exterior contamination and avoid them.

The Contamination Report must be sent by registered mail (within 24 hours after you receive our High Leak-Test Notice), to the Radiation Authority having jurisdiction in your area. This information can be found at the NRC website or, if you are located in an agreement state see your agreement state website.
